The long-anticipated sequel to The Stray was announced back in June of 2023 and began production in March 2023, shortly after the release of their remake of their legacy film from 2019, Stray.
The film has been writing for 17 months, with some being skeptical of the film even being made. Chase A. Coustley, the film's writer, director, producer and star, said "We weren't even sure it would get past pre-production.
"It was tricky, at the same time, because we had to film 'Kizlatio in Australia', a passion project of mine." He then elaborated, saying, "But it got really messy, because the show is fully improv[isation], so it has no script."

Coustley has now stated that The Stray 2 is more important to him. "I'll still try to get it [Kizlatio in Australia] out. That's still coming. But I'll have to pause production for a while as I figure out how to get it all done soon."
He stated he will re-edit the existing Kizlatio in Australia footage and "Get Zac [Deren], Kolbi [Benson], and Ash[tan Hase] together to film and conspire about it [Kizlatio in Australia]."
It has "also been tricky with MAN., a film that we entered for a film festival at St. Joseph's [College Geelong], expecting to be over and done with it by September. But now, with the facility flooded, we had to postpone.

"MAN. will now premiere on September 13th, release on the [September] 20th on Galaxy studios, and October 5th will be the extended release." He says "The postponing of MAN. has really contributed to everything being delayed."
And once all Kizlatio in Australia filming has wrapped, Coustley has stated that he will "focus primarily on Stray [2]" and "send out more casting calls for anyone out there who's interested!"
Coustley has also hinted at a return of many legacy characters, calling The Stray 2 "the thing that ties up all loose ends in Galaxy Studios. If you haven't seen the legacy films yet, I highly recommend you watch them before [The] Stray 2!"
